RYA Powerboat Training
We offer a series of practical courses which can be complemented by our navigation and other one-day support courses. Use them to increase your knowledge and confidence, or as a progression to the RYA/MCA Certificates of Competence which are recognised by maritime authorities worldwide.
Most of our courses take place over two days and can be taken either onboard our boat or your own. Courses are priced based on three candidates attending however we can quote you for a 1:1 or 1:2 training ratio.
You can enter the programme at any level, provided that you have the relevant experience beforehand.
Contact us for details of spaces on our next course or arrange a 1:1 course on a date to suit you.
Level 1
This course is an introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. Normal duration 1 day.
Level 2
This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It includes close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. The course can be taken inland or on the coast and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
Intermediate
This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. The course is a progression from Level 2 and builds on your confidence and the skills you have already attained through Levels 1 & 2.
Advanced
This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat by day or night in known or unfamiliar waters, the skipper’s role and boat handling in more demanding conditions.
RYA Powerboat Courses for under 16s
From the age of 8 you can take our Level 1 Powerboat Course, and from the age of 12 you can take the Level 2 course. You will be taught in suitable boats that aren’t too big or heavy for you to handle, and your course will be adapted to suit your age and ability.
After your course you will able to drive a powerboat under the supervision of an adult. From the age of 16 you can progress within our training scheme.
RYA First Aid Course
We also offer the RYA one day first aid course which is designed for small boat users. The course is MCA and HSE approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper, Yacht master and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence, and some commercial work afloat.
